The Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on International Justice and Peace, Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, calls on the international community “to mobilize greater humanitarian assistance support” for victims of deadly flash flooding in Nepal.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 27 August, Bishop A. Elias Zaidan calls on the international community “to mobilize greater humanitarian assistance support for vulnerable families and communities in Nepal.”
At the same time, he encourages “long-term efforts to help affected communities rebuild their homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.”
The Bishop offers “the prayers and solidarity” of the Church in the United States to all those affected by the humanitarian emergency. In particular, Bishop Zaidan says the US Bishops’ international relief agency, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), is monitoring the situation and coordinating with local aid agencies, including Caritas Nepal, to determine the best means to help.
He says the Bishops appreciated the US government’s partnership in supporting the mission of CRS, while expressing gratitude for its attention to the situation and practical support in sending “key personnel to support response efforts.”
Bishop Zaidan concludes his message with a prayer that the Immaculate Heart of Mary might “provide consolation and shelter to all those affected by this disaster” and “inspire the international community to work together, as one family, to address the urgent needs of the Nepalese people.”
