US Investments In Indian Securities Rise From $130 Billion In 2015 To $390 Billion In 2025

The value of US investments in Indian securities has witnessed a three-fold rise from USD 130 billion in 2015 to USD 390 billion in 2025, according to the data released by the US Treasury Department here.

India ranked 12th in the list of 30 nations with significant exposure to US portfolio holdings. The maximum US investments were in the Cayman Islands, amounting to USD 3.073 trillion, followed by the UK (2.007 trillion), Canada (1.886 trillion), Japan (1.483 trillion) and Ireland (1.182 trillion).

The preliminary data from an annual survey of US portfolio holdings of foreign securities at year-end 2025 were released on Monday.

The annual survey of US portfolio holdings was undertaken jointly by the US Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

The survey measured the value of US holdings of foreign securities at year-end 2025 at approximately USD 19.3 trillion, with USD 15.3 trillion held in foreign equities, USD 3.6 trillion held in foreign long-term debt securities (original term-to-maturity in excess of one year), and USD 0.4 trillion held in foreign short-term debt securities.

The previous such survey, conducted as of year-end 2024, measured the value of US holdings at USD 15.8 trillion, with USD 12.1 trillion held in foreign equities, USD 3.4 trillion held in foreign long-term debt securities, and USD 0.4 trillion held in foreign short-term debt securities.

According to the survey, US portfolio holdings in Indian equity were valued at USD 380 billion at the end of 2025, compared with USD 373 billion a year earlier.

Holdings of Indian long-term debt securities stood at USD 11 billion, up from USD 10 billion.

The figures measure the market value of Indian securities held by US investors. They do not include foreign direct investment in factories, infrastructure or other physical assets.

US portfolio holdings in China were valued at USD 318 billion with USD 300 billion in Chinese equities and USD 17 billion in long-term Chinese debt securities.
