Scottie Scheffler recorded his first professional victory at the Korn Ferry Tour’s 2019 Evans Scholars Invitational at the Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois.
Seven years later, another University of Texas product followed a similar script.
Tommy Morrison, the 6-foot-9 Longhorn playing in just his fourth event as a pro, capped a record-breaking, 29-under with an 8-under 63 on Sunday to win the same tournament on the same course – and with the same caddie, Scott McGuinness, who preceded Ted Scott as Scheffler’s bagman.
Morrison’s 72-hole total bested Johnny Keefer’s previous tournament record, set last year, by three strokes.
“If I would’ve held back today, I would’ve got my butt kicked,” said Morrison, who finished three strokes clear of runner-up Dylan Menante, who was another five ahead of third-place Ross Steelman. Morrison’s former Texas teammate Luke Potter for fourth.
Like Scheffler, Morrison, 21, was an accomplished amateur, reaching as high as fifth in the world rankings and playing on a victorious Walker Cup team; Morrison’s foursomes partner last year at Cypress Point, Jackson Koivun, won the 3M Open on Sunday.
Morrison entered this week on a heater with finishes of T-10, T-5 and second to begin his pro career. He now rises to eighth in KFT points and surely will join Koivun next year on the PGA Tour.
“No, no,” Morrison said when asked if he expected to be in this position, on the cusp of earning his PGA Tour card. “I really didn’t know how the points list worked and all that. And then after Amarillo, I finished 10th and I was pretty happy, saw I was 135th and I was like, OK, we’ve got a lot of work to do. It was a nice reminder there that you can’t really back down.”
Morrison’s win makes him the fifth PGA Tour University graduate since the program’s inception in 2021 to win in his first summer on the KFT – and first since Karl Vilips in 2024.
