The 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final fixtures are now complete after Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in the final Round of 16 fixture.
Neither side could find a breakthrough over 120 minutes in Vancouver, forcing the tournament’s first penalty shootout of the last 16.
Switzerland held their nerve from the spot to prevail 4-3 and book a quarter-final showdown with Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
The knockout stage has already produced several memorable moments, including England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in what many consider one of the matches of the tournament.
The Round of 16 also marked the exit of all three tournament co-hosts. Canada were comfortably beaten 3-0 by reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions Morocco, while the United States suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium after a match overshadowed by the Folarin Balogun controversy.
Tournament favourites France edged Paraguay 1-0 to reach the last eight, while Argentina produced a remarkable comeback from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2, with Messi once again proving decisive.
Norway delivered one of the biggest upsets of the competition by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1, inspired by Erling Haaland.
Spain also advanced after a tense Iberian derby, with an injury-time winner securing a 1-0 victory over Portugal.
