World Environment Day: Engineers pledge to implement sustainable key initiatives in urban areas – EnviroNews

The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has pledged to implement sustainable, data-driven initiatives in urban areas to combat pollution, manage resources and build climate resilience.
Mr. Caius Ikem, the National Chairman of NIEE, made the pledge during an event in commemoration of the 2026 World Environment Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Abuja.
“During this week of celebration, the NIEE aims to raise awareness and implement key initiatives to strengthen our urban areas.
“This year, we will focus on the sub theme: Urbanisation and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future.
“Our cities, as vital economic engines, must adapt to create sustainable and resilient urban environments,” Ikem said.
According to him, the NIEE recognises the critical need to address the associated risks posed by climate change, including increased flooding and threats to infrastructure and livelihoods.
The chairman said that as part of the activities to mark a week long 2026 World Environment Day NIEE would enhance green cover and mitigate climate effects in urban areas.
“The NIEE will organise workshops and seminars to educate communities about sustainable practices and resilience to climate impacts and also collaborate with governments to propose and implement projects that enhance urban resilience.
“We will establish green infrastructure through tree planting initiatives and promote sustainable urban practices, enhance sustainable transportation by developing bike and pedestrian pathways.
“We will conduct urban resilience assessments to understand and mitigate vulnerabilities in urban areas, implement waste management programmes that promote recycling and up-cycling,” he said.
Ikem stated that NIEE will push for smart city initiatives through data analytics and public-private partnerships.
“Together, we can protect our environment while fostering economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians.
“Let us work hand in hand to create resilient cities for a sustainable future. Together, we can make a difference,” the NIEE Chairman assured.
Also speaking, Mrs. Edith Ishidi, a fellow of NIEE, expressed concern over the manner residents dispose of plastic wastes from their cars when driving around the city highways.
“It becomes disturbing sometimes you’re driving when you see someone in a private car fling an empty PET bottle after taking the water or the drink.
“We have not been fair to the environment. Environment is every man’s business.
“Government cannot do it alone. NGOs cannot do it alone. The private sector cannot do it alone. It is every man’s business. Keep your space healthy,” she said.
Mr. Thomas Itodo, Chairman of the NIEE Maitama branch, urged citizens to collaborate with the institution to combat the menace of flooding, that threaten the lives and properties of this nation.
