U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that artificial intelligence will be a key topic of discussion when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the United States on September 24, as Washington and Beijing seek to stabilise ties despite ongoing strategic competition.

Speaking on Thursday, Trump said he had already discussed AI with Xi during his visit to China earlier this year and expected the issue to feature prominently again when the Chinese leader travels to Washington.

“President Xi is coming over on September 24th, and we talked about it (artificial intelligence) when I was over in Beijing, and we’ll be talking about it again,” Trump said.

Xi’s visit follows Trump’s trip to Beijing earlier this year, during which the U.S. president invited the Chinese leader to the White House as both sides looked to maintain high-level engagement.

The announcement comes a day after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with both sides agreeing on the need to identify areas of cooperation ahead of what officials described as a “very positive visit.”

The upcoming summit is expected to cover a range of issues, including artificial intelligence, trade, technology, and broader U.S.-China relations, at a time when the world’s two largest economies remain locked in competition over advanced technologies while also seeking avenues for dialogue.
