Northern Cape police divers are returning to Vaallus Farm in Douglas on Saturday to continue searching for farm workers who went missing after a makeshift boat capsized in the Vaal River on Thursday.
The boat was used daily by around 20 workers to cross the Vaal River between Vaallus Farm and Olierivier Farm when it capsized. Fourteen workers made it safely to the riverbank. Five bodies have been retrieved over Thursday and Friday, with three workers still missing.
Provincial police spokesperson Molefi Shemane confirmed that search operations would resume on Saturday.
“The search and rescue team will resume operations on Saturday, 20 June 2026, in an effort to locate the missing person believed to have drowned. Investigations are continuing,” Shemane said.
