Loughborough’s Beehive Lane multi-storey car park will benefit from major upgrades with three projects set to get underway.
Work is due to begin soon to replace both the lifts, resurface the top floor, retile the stairways and install further electric vehicle charging points.
The car park is owned and operated by Charnwood Borough Council and the total investment in the site is £750,000.
Cllr Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s Lead Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “This is a key investment in a car park at the centre of Loughborough which is vital in supporting our local economy and town centre businesses.
“The lifts at the site are at the end of life and it is important that they are kept to the highest standard to ensure the car park remains accessible for all.
“I am also pleased that work is also due to begin to resurface both the top floor and retile the stairways. Alongside this, we need to ensure our car parks are well-equipped as visitors switch more to electric vehicles which is why we need to make sure the charging infrastructure is in place.”
Work on the lifts starts on Monday, 22 June 2026 which means they will be closed from that date, along with one stairwell. Two other stairwells will remain in use.
The ground floor of the car park will be prioritised for disabled and parent and child parking, alongside some electric vehicle charging bays. Visitors are encouraged to park on higher floors and use the stairs, if they are able to. This is a temporary measure while the work takes place.
The lifts are expected to be out of use for around five months.
Two additional electric vehicle bays will be installed in the car park, taking the total number of charging points up to four. These bays are also being expanded to make them more accessible for visitors. There is expected to be minor disruption to the bays while the new points are installed.
Funding has also been secured to install an electric vehicle hub at the Southfields Extension car park which includes a number of charging bays. A solar canopy will be installed to provide power for these charging points.
The borough council-owned car parks in Loughborough, including the Beehive Lane multi-storey, have been recognised by the British Parking Association for the past 20 years as part of the Park Mark scheme.
