Minister Inaugurates NEDC’s Fertility Centre, Maternity Complex

Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, has inaugurated a modern fertility centre and a maternity complex with over 40 labour rooms, built by the North East Development Commission (NDC) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

After the event in Maiduguri yesterday, the minister noted that the equipment in the fertility centre is the best available anywhere in the world, adding that President Bola Tinubu has continued to invest heavily through government agencies across all sectors.

Ahmadu said the centre is one component of the NEDC’s health-sector infrastructure.
He added that everything is on course, saying that the least citizens can do, after solving the critical problem that would have forced them to leave their natural environment and travel to distant places to seek medical attention, is to support the government.

“What we just witnessed is the commissioning of a world-class fertility centre. The equipment in this building is the best you can find anywhere in the world.

“We want to thank the Borno State government and the good people of Borno. We want to use this opportunity to implore all the citizens to do their own part. ” As we gradually move into campaigns for the election, one return deserves another”, said the Minister of State for Regional Development.

In his remarks, Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, said the fertility centre built by the NEDC will provide the necessary services to families who cannot give birth in a natural environment.

“We have seen a centre that is well built and well equipped with billions of naira. This will go a long way in reducing medical tourism. On behalf of the good people of Borno State, I would like to commend the NEDC for a job well done.

“This is not the only project done by NEDC in UMTH. They have built many centres and procured a great deal of equipment. Recently, the NEDC procured modern MRI and CT scans for almost all the tertiary health facilities in the Northeast region at a cost of N70 billion.

“I want to commend them and assure them that the Governors of the Northeastern region will continue to support them and posterity will judge them positively,” Governor Zulum said.

The Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, revealed that the Fertility Care Centre built by the Commission in UMTH is one of the very few fertility centres available in a public health facility in the North East region and was completed in May 2026.

The MD/CEO of NEDC added that the Commission has stepped in to fill a critical gap in access to reproductive health care services, saying that families previously had to travel to Lagos, Abuja, or abroad at great personal cost. At the same time, many could not afford the journey and gave up hope.

Alkali said the nature of the centre is a State-of-the-art fertility centre, with all infrastructure fully constructed by NEDC and equipped with world-class medical technology, adding that the Commission also provided Solar power for uninterrupted service delivery.

“Provides complete surgical and diagnostic equipment, all estimated in billions, including ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection machine), incubators, oxygen concentrators, spermifuge, and laboratory equipment, among others, easily at par with global standards.

“The Commission also provided full furniture and support infrastructure, fully equipped and furnished delivery ensuite wards and offices. ioneer health workers for the Fertility centre (from UMTH) received intensive specialised training funded fully by the Commission to ensure skilled personnel to operate the equipment,” the MD further said. nd
