Pope urges Peruvian youth to serve the forgotten with ‘holy rebellion’
In a message to young people of Chota and Cutervo, Pope Leo XIV urges them to embrace a “holy rebellion” and transform situations of suffering into places of hope through joyful service.

Pope Leo XIV has encouraged young people in the Peruvian Prelature of Chota and Cutervo to place their energy and enthusiasm at the service of others, especially those who are most forgotten, urging them to become agents of hope in their communities.
In a video message addressed to participants in the second Diocesan Youth Day of Chota and Cutervo, held in the region of Cutervo, the Pope expressed his joy at seeing young people from the Prelature’s 18 parishes gathered to celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ.
“You are the youth of Christ,” Pope Leo XIV said, highlighting this year’s theme of the gathering: “Called to love, sent to serve.”
The Pope invited young people not to settle for comfort or passivity, encouraging them instead to bring the vitality of their faith into the Church and society.
“Jesus does not want you to be ‘young people of the armchair’, asleep or settled into the comfort of ‘this is how it has always been done’,” he said.
A holy rebellion that transforms reality
Pope Leo XIV called on young people to embrace what he described as a “holy rebellion” — a courageous desire to respond to situations of suffering and injustice with the hope of the Gospel.
“The Church in Chota and Cutervo needs your holy rebellion, your pure energy, your desire to transform realities of pain into spaces of hope,” he said.
The Pope encouraged young people to recognise their missionary vocation in everyday life: in schools, universities, streets and rural communities.
“Feel called to be missionaries,” he said, inviting them to serve with joy and commitment.
Serving where Christ’s suffering face is found
Pope Leo XIV placed particular emphasis on service to those who are often overlooked or forgotten, reminding young people that Christ is encountered in those who suffer.
“Serve with joy, especially the most forgotten, because that is where the suffering face of Jesus is found,” he said.
The Pope concluded by entrusting the young people of Chota and Cutervo to the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption, patroness of Cutervo, asking her to guide and protect them.
