Pope welcomes the President of the Republic of Korea to the Vatican
In the morning, Pope Leo XIV welcomed President Lee Jae-myung of the Republic of Korea, who then met with Cardinal Secretary of State to discuss the good relations between the two countries.

In the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican on Monday morning, Pope Leo XIV welcomed the President of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Mr. Lee Jae-myung. After meeting with the Pope, the President also had an audience with Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

During the meeting held at the Secretariat of State, the two spoke about the good relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Korea—established 63 years ago in 1963. Since then, the two countries have maintained close relations, with Pope St. John Paul II visiting the country twice—in 1984 and 1989—and Pope Francis in 2014 on the occasion of the 6th Asian Youth Day.
The Cardinal Secretary of State and the President of the Republic of Korea also reflected on the “positive contribution offered by the local Catholic Church to Korean society, particularly in the fields of education and social welfare”, according to the Holy See Press Office press release.
Talks also touched on the upcoming World Youth Day in 2027 and “to certain aspects of the regional and international situation.”
