TotalEnergies, NCF extend recycling programme to 14 Lagos schools – EnviroNews

TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc has expanded its school recycling and environmental education initiative to 14 schools in Lagos with the donation of recycling bins and climate awareness programmes.

The Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, Mr. Wilfried Konde, disclosed this on Monday, July 13, during activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day at Aje Community Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, Yaba.

Konde said the initiative, implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action.

He said the programme, which previously covered 10 schools around the company’s facilities in Apapa, Surulere and Victoria Island, had now been extended to four additional schools.

According to him, about 500 students have benefited through environmental education, recycling bin donations and inter-school clean-up activities.

Konde said recyclables were collected twice every school term under the supervision of environmental club coordinators and district environmental officers.

He disclosed that participating schools collected 12,596 kilogrammes of recyclable waste between December 2024 and June 2026.

“Today, with the support of our employees and station staff in Yaba and Apapa, we are extending the initiative to four additional schools through recycling bin donations and an inter-school clean-up challenge,” he said.

Konde urged young people to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to building a cleaner and healthier environment.

Also speaking, the General Manager, Country Services, TotalEnergies Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Adesua Adewole, said environmental sustainability remained central to the company’s operations.

She said the company had consistently marked World Environment Day through impactful environmental initiatives in support of the SDGs.

According to her, TotalEnergies, which is marking its 70th anniversary in Nigeria this year, has remained committed to environmental protection since it began operations in 1956.

Adewole said the company’s first service station, Herbert Macaulay Station, was located close to the host school.

She said the programme was designed to educate pupils on the Sustainable Development Goals while promoting responsible waste management.

“We are donating waste bins to encourage proper waste disposal, while our partners, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, are providing practical environmental education for the pupils.

“By educating children early, we are helping to raise a generation that will build a more sustainable future,” she said.

She added that the latest intervention increased the number of beneficiary schools from 10 to 14, covering schools around the Herbert Macaulay service station and the company’s depot on Burma Road, Apapa.

Earlier, the Principal of Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, Mrs. Caroline Awofeso, commended TotalEnergies for supporting environmental education in the school.

Awofeso said the donation would improve the learning environment and assured the company that the recycling bins would be properly utilised.

The event featured environmental awareness sessions and the presentation of recycling bins to the beneficiary schools.
