Two suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town on Friday after they were allegedly found in possession of three fully automatic assault rifles at an informal settlement near Philippi on the Cape Flats.
The arrests followed a police operation after unrest at the Siqalo Informal Settlement on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala says officers were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious vehicle.
Gwala says, “The members were deployed following an unrest at Siqalo informal settlement on Thursday, 25 June 2026. While patrolling on Jakes Gerwel Drive, they spotted a suspicious red Uno Fiat and closely monitored its movements. At about 12:15, the vehicle stopped in front of a shopping complex and the members approached it…
“They noticed that the license disc expired in 2023 and proceeded to search the vehicle. They found a big white bag in the boot with three fully automatic assault rifles and arrested the two occupants on the spot for possession of prohibited firearms.”
The two suspects are expected to face charges relating to the possession of prohibited firearms when they appear in court today.
