China has developed nearly 200 key artificial intelligence standards, while AI applications are taking shape across multiple sectors, a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology official said at a press conference on Wednesday.
The development comes as China expands its computing infrastructure and prepares to deepen the use of AI across manufacturing during the 15th Five-Year Plan period from 2026 to 2030.
By the end of June, China’s intelligent computing power had reached 2,185 EFLOPS, according to the ministry.
Meanwhile, more than 70 major computing corridors had been built around national computing hubs. The figures highlight the country’s focus on strengthening the infrastructure needed to support expanding AI applications.
During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China will pursue an application-driven strategy to take “AI+manufacturing” to new levels of speed, sophistication and effectiveness, said Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology.
On the supply side, China will focus on consolidating its technology base. The ministry will support frontier research and development in high-end training chips, humanoid robots and intelligent terminal upgrades.
The aim is to better serve the needs of different industries as AI applications expand.
At the same time, efforts on the application side will focus on identifying real-world use scenarios. The ministry will identify high-value scenarios across industries and nurture application service providers.
As a result, authorities want AI tools to become more accessible, affordable and effective for enterprises.
China will also advance the development of AI standards across different areas. Relevant authorities will work on standards covering foundational technologies, application-specific requirements and safety ethics.
These standards will be tailored to different levels and categories, according to the ministry.
Security will remain another focus. Authorities plan to monitor AI security risks, share information and strengthen notification and response mechanisms.
They will also build and use a security vulnerability database for AI products. In addition, China will continue technological work on deep-synthesis detection, model algorithm security protection and value alignment.
“Our focus is on effectively mitigating risks,” Xin said. He added that the measures are intended to ensure AI serves humanity and remains under human control.
