President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws that will deepen Nigeria’s democracy, promote national development and improve the welfare of citizens.
The Senate President made the pledge through the Senate Minority Whip, Senator Tony Nwoye, at the 2026 National Legislative Awards, where Africa Independent Television’s National Assembly Correspondent, Nancy Oyediya Urum, received the Most Outstanding Parliamentary Reporter in the Senate award in recognition of her exceptional coverage of legislative affairs.
With the theme, “Where Advocacy Meets a Night of Distinction,” the ceremony celebrated individuals who have demonstrated excellence in legislative practice, effective representation, impactful lawmaking and parliamentary journalism.
Among those honoured were senators, members of the House of Representatives, parliamentary staff and journalists.

DAAR Communications’ Senate Correspondent, Nancy Oyediya Urum, stood out among her peers, earning the Most Outstanding Parliamentary Reporter in the Senate award for her accurate, consistent and insightful reporting of the National Assembly. Her recognition reflects the professionalism and editorial excellence that continue to distinguish DAAR Communications’ parliamentary coverage.
Organisers urged all award recipients to remain steadfast in upholding excellence, professionalism, accuracy, transparency and diligence in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The ceremony also reaffirmed the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through an open-door policy that encourages greater engagement with citizens, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, women and persons with disabilities.
The awards celebrated excellence in legislative service and parliamentary journalism while underscoring the indispensable role of a free, responsible and professional press in advancing Nigeria’s democratic development.
