During periods of warm weather, it can be tempting to head to open water to cool down.
Former Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE is an open water swimmer and world record holder who has swum the English Channel solo twice, including once at the age of 15 and again in 2002 using butterfly.
Cllr Bradshaw is encouraging anyone considering swimming in open water to be aware of the potential dangers.
Cllr Bradshaw said: “I’ve taken part in many open water swims over the years, raising money for charity and even achieving a few world records along the way.
“However, what people don’t always see is the level of training, preparation and acclimatisation required. Entering open water without being properly prepared can quickly become dangerous.
“I would like to reiterate the safety advice issued by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.
“Open water can often be much colder, deeper and more unpredictable than it appears. Even on a hot day, the water temperature may be significantly lower.
“It’s always safest to swim as part of an organised event where safety measures are in place. You should never swim alone or without supervision.
“Avoid entering the water if you have been drinking alcohol, are sunburnt or feeling tired, as this can increase the risk of getting into difficulty.
“It’s important to understand your own limits and think carefully before entering the water.
“By following the guidance from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, we can all enjoy the warm weather safely.”
