NUJ, NRC mourn Dotun Oladipo, hail late journalist’s enduring legacy in Nigerian media – EnviroNews

The Nigerian media community has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran journalist, publisher and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Mr. Dotun Oladipo, with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) describing his passing as a devastating loss to journalism and the nation.
Oladipo, the publisher of The Eagle Online and former Politics Editor of The Punch, reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56, leaving behind a legacy of journalism, leadership and advocacy for professionalism in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital media landscape.
In a condolence message, the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, said the union received news of Oladipo’s death with profound shock and sadness.
Abdullahi described the late journalist as a distinguished media professional whose death represented a painful loss not only to the journalism community but also to Nigeria.
“At a time when journalism requires courage, professionalism, integrity and commitment to democratic values, the media industry has lost one of its dedicated practitioners and advocates,” the NUJ President said.
He noted that Oladipo devoted several decades to journalism and distinguished himself through his commitment to credible reporting, public accountability and the advancement of the media profession.
According to Abdullahi, Oladipo played a significant role in the growth of digital journalism in Nigeria through his work as publisher of The Eagle Online, demonstrating a clear understanding of the changing media landscape and the growing importance of online platforms in informing citizens and holding institutions accountable.
The NUJ President also highlighted Oladipo’s tenure as President of GOCOP, saying his leadership reflected a strong commitment to the professionalisation of online publishing and the promotion of responsible journalism.
“His leadership of GOCOP also demonstrated his commitment to the professionalisation of online publishing and the promotion of responsible journalism. He believed in the capacity of the media to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development,” Abdullahi said.
He described Oladipo’s death as a major setback to the journalism profession, noting that beyond his professional accomplishments, the late publisher served as a mentor, advocate, colleague and friend to many within the media fraternity.
“Dotun Oladipo’s voice may have been silenced, but his contributions to Nigerian journalism will continue to speak for him,” he added.
On behalf of the National Executive Council of the NUJ and the Nigerian journalism community, Abdullahi extended condolences to Oladipo’s family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, members of GOCOP, professional associates, friends and colleagues.
Similarly, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa, described Oladipo’s death as a great loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the country.
The NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, said Opeifa paid tribute to the late journalist’s immense contributions to political reporting and his role in efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s digital media space.
Until his death, Oladipo was a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the International Press Institute, in addition to his role as publisher of The Eagle Online.
Opeifa recalled the late journalist’s passion for the profession and his efforts to strengthen credibility and professionalism in online journalism, particularly through the formation and activities of GOCOP.
According to him, Oladipo was deeply concerned about the infiltration of the digital media space by unprofessional elements and worked with other stakeholders to promote ethical standards and responsible online publishing.
The NRC Managing Director said Oladipo’s professional career reflected the critical role journalists play in informing citizens, holding public officials accountable and providing a platform for robust public discourse.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation,” Opeifa said.
“He was a committed believer in Nigeria’s democracy and through his public discourse, you could see him as a patriot who loved and was willing to protect public causes.”
Opeifa described the late journalist as a critical thought leader and game changer whose contributions to political journalism and digital media would not be forgotten.
He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s wife, children, family, friends and professional colleagues, praying for strength and comfort for those left behind.
The death of Oladipo has triggered an outpouring of tributes across Nigeria’s media community, with colleagues and stakeholders remembering him as a journalist who combined professional excellence with a commitment to strengthening institutions and promoting ethical journalism.
For many who worked with him, his passing represents not only the loss of an experienced journalist and publisher but also the departure of one of the prominent voices that helped shape Nigeria’s online publishing industry.
