The United States said a high-level meeting with Iran will take place in Doha on Tuesday, with President Donald Trump’s senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner leading the American delegation.
President Trump announced on social media that Iran had requested the meeting but did not provide further details.
Shortly afterwards, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to the Qatari capital for the talks.
Leavitt said technical discussions would continue alongside the high-level meeting as both sides worked on implementing the memorandum of understanding agreed on June 17.
“Special Envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be flying to Doha for high-level meetings this week, as we continue to discuss the memorandum of understanding. On the sidelines of those high-level talks, will be the technical talks,” she said.
The United States and Iran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at ending four months of conflict. The agreement included a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes.
However, the truce has come under pressure following exchanges of strikes over the weekend after an Iranian projectile hit a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. Both Washington and Tehran have accused each other of violating the interim ceasefire.
Leavitt said Washington remained committed to the ceasefire but warned that any further attacks would draw a response.
“As far as we’re concerned, we’re holding up our end of the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence,” she said.
She added that while the United States had responded to attacks on commercial shipping, President Trump remained committed to seeing the peace process move forward.
