PETROAN urges retailers to calibrate fuel pumps as NMDPRA intensifies enforcement – EnviroNews

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed its members to immediately calibrate and verify dispensing pumps and totalisers at their retail outlets following a directive by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The association said the directive followed concerns raised by the regulator over reported cases of under-dispensing of petroleum products at retail outlets across the country.
In a circular signed by PETROAN National President, Dr. Billy S. Gillis-Harry, and National Secretary, Barr. Adedibu Aderibigbe, the association urged petroleum retailers to treat the NMDPRA directive with “the utmost seriousness” and ensure full compliance.
According to PETROAN, the NMDPRA has warned that under-dispensing constitutes a breach of consumer trust and will not be tolerated.
The association said all petroleum retail outlet operators were required to immediately inspect, calibrate and verify their dispensing pumps and totalizers to ensure accurate measurement and guarantee that consumers receive the full quantity of products for which they pay.
PETROAN further disclosed that the regulator had intensified inspection and enforcement activities nationwide as part of efforts to ensure compliance with dispensing standards.
“Retail outlets found to be under-dispensing, operating with improperly calibrated equipment, or engaging in any practices that compromise dispensing accuracy will be required to take immediate corrective actions,” the association said.
It added that the NMDPRA had warned that persistent or serious violations could attract sanctions, including the revocation of operating licences in accordance with applicable regulations.
PETROAN said it was among the industry associations specifically requested by the NMDPRA to notify its members and support the implementation of the directive.
The association therefore urged its members to undertake immediate inspections of their dispensing equipment and ensure that all pumps and totalizers are properly calibrated and verified.
Members were also advised to maintain accurate records of calibration and maintenance activities to demonstrate compliance during regulatory inspections.
PETROAN called on retail operators to cooperate fully with NMDPRA inspection teams and uphold transparency, integrity and consumer protection in their operations.
The association said compliance was essential not only to protect consumers but also to preserve the credibility and reputation of Nigeria’s petroleum retail sector.
“Together, we must continue to protect the interests of consumers and preserve the credibility and reputation of petroleum retail operations throughout Nigeria,” PETROAN said.
The directive comes amid heightened regulatory attention to the accuracy of petroleum product measurements at retail outlets, with the NMDPRA seeking to ensure that motorists and other consumers receive the quantities of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products indicated by dispensing equipment.
PETROAN said it remained committed to promoting professionalism, regulatory compliance and best industry practices among petroleum product retailers nationwide.
